Listening, Corporeality and Presence
The use of sound to create or enhance the sense of presence is well recognized and the measurements of which have focused on hearing, e.g. “were you able to identify a particular sound?”, “how well could you localize the sounds”. To this treatment of audition we now add, listening. Listening is active, directed, intentional hearing. This aspect of the phenomenology of sound listening has receiv...

ion, symbolic thought, metaphor thus are depicted as properties of the male; the female is completely excluded from meaningful symbolic communication. But the sema itself, the product of metis, provides a false security which these texts also acknowledge. The creation of the first sema, at least in the Theogony, is explicitly linked to the female in the figure of Pandora, the perfect sema, the ...

Networked communications accord the voice renewed spatial significance. How does the mobile phone influence the use and design of spaces? The conventions for modulating the voice in face-to-face exchanges are well established. But in the case of mobile communications the voice may be raised to abnormal levels. The raised voice overcomes ambient interference, and spatial distance. The voice is a...

virtual environments, and information display applications need dynamic sound models rather than faithful audio reproductions. This implies three levels of research: auditory perception, physicsbased sound modeling, and expressive parametric control. Parallel progress along these three lines leads to effective auditory displays that can complement or substitute visual displays. W hen designing ...
متن کاملSpatialisation using Sounding Objects
A new approach to spatialisation, based on the idea of projecting sounds through virtual sounding objects, is proposed, and initial experiments are carried out using a modal synthesis model of a rectangular membrane. The effects of varying the dimensions and damping parameters of the model on the perception of spatial attributes are discussed, as well as the relevance to sound diffusion.
